On the evening of Tuesday November 23rd, 2004, the Kennedy family suffered a tragic loss involving their 5 year old son, Donavan Jon-Michael Kennedy. While exact facts will never truly be known, we do know that early Tuesday evening, Donavan was put to bed. Was he playing and slipped? Did the sash of his housecoat inadvertently get caught around his neck? We don't know. But less than an hour later, as is their custom, a family member went to check on the children. Donavan was found hanging by the sash of his housecoat from the loft bed. Donavan died later that night at Victoria General Hospital.
In memory of Donavan, the Kennedy family have established a memorial fund called "Donavan's Campaign for children's safety". This fund will be used for education and awareness of the hazards involved in children's clothing - specifically the unattached sashes on children's housecoats. The Kennedy family encourages you to take some time today and look at your children's clothing - it may take you a few minutes, but it may prevent another tragic accident and perhaps save your child's life.
